If you plan on hunting in an area that you've never been to before, you should certainly scout the land beforehand to know all the areas of the deer would probably go to. Elk hunting requires intensive study and practice.
Some guns are too powerful, and others not powerful enough. Once you find your spot, get your tree stand mounted so deer can get used to seeing it. Never use perfume or aftershave or scented deodorants before going game hunting.
Other breeds used as bear hunting dogs are the Plott hounds and the Walker hounds. It's recommended to use non-scented cleaning compounds and the allowing the clothes to dry in natural air elements outside. It's important to remain quite and still when hunting for whitetail deer.
Luck has helped some over time but by and large the hunters who take the big ones year after year know things you do not. As you may have seen in the nature channel, deer are very sensitive.
